In simple terms, DHTML, and especially JavaScript doesn’t aide SEO because search engines can’t read them. So, it doesn’t take away from anything, it just doesn’t count for anything.

So, what are the ramifications of this? Well, basically, anything written in JavaScript is not going to be read by a search engine. So, what would you do if your complete website were built in JavaScript, it would count as a blank page. And, as anybody who has done SEO can tell you, a blank page, while certainly possible to rank, is significantly more complex and, for very competitive keywords, close to impossible.

Easily put, you can use DHTML to your heart’s content, you just have to make certain that your website incorporates everything you want to be seen in a formatting that does not include DHTML. Use it sparingly to spruce things up; don’t rely on it. This way you can have the best of both worlds: a attractive website that will rank.
