2. The cost-per-click could be extremely high if the keyword is too competitive. If you target under the radar keywords, in less competitive niche, the traffic is really cheap, perhaps less than 10 cents per click. One of the most important parts of using Google Adwords is being able to track conversions accurately. After you’ve made your selection of keywords, created a compelling ad, and then implemented your Google Adwords campaign, the next step is to start tracking conversions and reviewing the results.
You have the option of simply using your landing page hits and number of sales from a link to analyze your conversions. But it’s also worth looking at the tools Google provide its Adwords users for acquiring conversion data. Here are some tips and guidelines for using Google’s conversion tracking tools.
If you’re checkout process involves using a shopping cart or requires confirmation on the end of a buyer, you need to embed your conversion link using Javascript. JavaScript is required to send information back to the Google Adwords tracker.
This tool does not show the number of visitors to your site; but it tracks click-throughs on your ads that resulted in a conversion. Once you place the simple code into your website, you can then access the data in the Reports Center of Google Adwords under ‘Campaign Summary’.
There are only two conditions for the above method to work and track your conversions accurately. The first is that you should be running approved Adwords ads on your site and the second condition is you should place the code only in your conversion page.
You can verify if the code is working by completing a complete conversion yourself. If you can find out exactly when a user has clicked on your ad and completed the conversion process, you can review your conversion reports within 24 hours and see the click-through on the report summary. Avoid clicking your own ads, as this is a breach of the Google Adwords terms of service contract.
You can still track your conversions if you are using a payment checkout system, like PayPal. PayPal and most other systems offer a conversion confirmation webpage wherein you can insert your Adwords tracking code. You will have a record of all conversions or sales once a customer successfully completes the checkout process.
The book “Google: The Missing Manual”, written by J.D. Biersdorfer, Mathew McDonald, and Sarah Milstein, justifies the importance of knowing your total cost per conversion.
This information will let you understand how much it actually costs to generate your sale; you can calculate this by using the free conversion-tracking tools and matching the number of conversions up with the total cost of your campaign for any given period of time. To calculate this, you will need to produce a summary report of keyword purchases at the end of each month and divide the number of conversions by your total costs to run the ad.

Optimizing Google Adwords and other PPC campaigns naturally consume time and effort because of all the data gathering and testing you need to do. However, there are techniques that are known to improve any campaign’s performance quickly. Running different ad variations is the most popular technique to optimize PPC campaigns. Some of your ad versions will gather more clicks than others do; it’s just a matter of discarding low-performing ads.
Still, there are other ways to fine-tune your pay-per-click efforts. Peter Kent, author of the book ‘Pay Per Click Search Engine Marketing for Dummies’ identifies several techniques for improving your Quality Score on Google Adwords and creating effective, highly targeted campaigns. Here are some simple strategies to help you improve PPC ad performance and increase click through rates:
1. Use negative match keywords. Adding Negative Match keywords to your campaign can eliminate unnecessary clicks and attract a higher quality of visitors to your site. Negative matching is easy to coordinate with Google Adwords; you need to indicate which words you don’t want to include in the campaign, and Google will not display your ad on results pages that search with that word.
2. Change your CPCs for major keywords. Modifying the CPCs of your major keywords may boost your campaign’s overall performance. Just click on ‘Tools’ under the Campaign Management tab to modify your campaign. You have complete control of your ads here and this makes it easier to optimize your efforts.
3. Edit and resubmit rejected ads. Google reviews every ad before running them on their network. Ads that do not pass the review are stored in your Campaign Management tab allowing you to edit and resubmit them at anytime. Don’t be discouraged if your ad was rejected. Tweak some words and resubmit it again.
4. Implement ‘Dayparting’. ‘Dayparting’ is a technique wherein you define the time when your ads will run. This is mainly done to improve your click through rates since your running ads only when your target audience is at their most receptive state. For instance, you are marketing restaurant coupons, it would be better to run your ads a few hours before lunch or dinner when people are searching for a place to eat.
5. Understand your target market. You need to understand your audience first before you can reel them in with your ads. Find out why they would be interested in your product. You might also want to look at existing promotions they are already responding and buying. See how these promotions talk to your market and how your market talks in discussion forums and blogs.
Improving your Adwords or pay-per-click marketing efforts may involve a rigorous trial-and-error process, but there are several things you can do today to get started. Use these tips and techniques to improve your ad strategy and start generating high quality clicks and leads.

If you have a particular interesting in making search engine company investors extremely happy by paying endless amounts of money to the search engines companies, then Pay Per Click (PPC) can be a great way to go.
Just joking guys, PPC is one of the staples in relation to web traffic on the Internet and is a very quick and easy way to get visitors to your site (though you do need to take care that you watch the amount you spend, and set daily limits, etc).
For those readers who are not familiar with PPC, essentially it’s the process whereby the search engines will present your short ad to people using the search engine (on the results page when the results of the users search are displayed).
Usually the ads are shown to the right hand side of the page, but in any event they are usually shown separate from the “normal” search engine results.
You pay for each click a user makes on your ad (no clicks means you have nothing to pay). Usually your ad when clicked would navigate to your website, but sometimes it may be to an affiliates website if you are selling other peoples products.
So in one sense, only paying per click is a good thing, because in theory people clicking your ad have some interest in your product or service, so they come to your website more qualified that a person who may just have happened to surf by.
You really need to spend time thinking about what phrases people would use to get to your website.
You don’t want to be taking chances with this. You don’t want to assume you know which keyword phrases are used by people wanting your websites (or more correctly, the keyword phrases people are using to find solutions to the particular problem they are trying to solve). You really want to know for sure that the keyword phrases you use are correct for your market.
In fact I am constantly surprised by some of the phrases people use when searching. Spelling mistakes are common, abbreviations are often used, punctuation can be used inappropriately, etc. The good news is that there are a number of things you can do here.
Firstly you could do some experimentation with the search engines yourself and use all the keyword phrases you think should be used to find products in your niche. Go to the search engine and type them in and have a look at the results. Are the sites that are returned relevant to your niche?
In other words if you positioned yourself in that area would people searching in those categories find your websites content relevant (it goes without saying that you have great content, right?).
If the answer is yes and you think you would find it relevant, jot down the keyword phrase.
Also take a note of the number of sponsored links (advertisers) usually listed on the right or top of the search engine results (usually it explicitly mentions they are sponsored links). The actual number is important because too few could mean that perhaps the keyword phrase is not commonly used (but it could also mean you have found a golden nugget, that is a particular keyword phrase that is being used but not being actively targeted by Advertisers).
When considering finding out more about pay per click marketing; it pays to do a little research first as a good way to move forward fast!
Too many sponsored results may mean the keyword phrase is heavily used and it may be expensive to get your sponsored links working (but again this could be a golden opportunity for you).
In general the search engines put the sponsored link that has bid the most money at the top of the list, so a quick way to ensure your up front is to pay the most (and bid more than your opposition).
However bear in mind as well, that the search engines also sort-sponsored links by the click through rate (CTR), in other words the number of times a sponsored link is clicked versus the number of times it is shown on screen in search engine results.
A sponsored link with a higher CTR indicates that more people are clicking that link, and you will find a sponsored link with a high CTR will rank higher in many cases that other sponsored links even if they have bid less money. So it is possible to have your cake and eat it to (or in this case to bid a smaller amount and have you sponsored link appear higher than your competitors who are paying more for their ad’s than you are!).
Of course to do this (get a higher CTR than other sponsored links) you need to draw attention to your ad, so your content (ad) must be more compelling than your competitors. Given the lack of space in these ads you need to be really creative to get your link clicked on more often than your competitors (even if your happy paying more than your competitors per click).
The number one sponsored link is not always going to be clicked more often than other ads, especially if it does not give the person more of a reason to want to click it, than the ads near it.
Whatever you do, don’t just set-up a PPC campaign and leave it unchecked. Even if your having some success, make sure you go into the campaign details by logging into the search engine website for PPC marketers, and then check out the stats regularly to see how you are going because things can change very quickly as new competitors come into the marketplace.
You need to be continually checking your keywords, CTR’s of your ads, and fine tuning and tweaking to run things optimally. I am not suggesting this needs to be daily, but it just depends on your particular campaign and your niche.
This is probably a good place to discuss link tracking on your website.
You can purchase software that gets installed onto your website that makes it really quite easy to see the traffic coming to your website and where it originates. It’s a good idea to do this to work out how much traffic your getting from your various sources (PPC, free Google search, press releases, etc).
The other reason why you want to be checking your ads frequently is that over time you will certainly find some ads performing better than others. You can see at one glance the CTR of your various ads, but also with link tracking it’s possible to work out the ads that are actually making you money (people are actually buying off the ad in higher proportions to other ads).
PPC is a fantastic way to get instant traffic to your website, just make sure you are doing your sums and keeping track of your expenditure and of course checking your ads regularly as well as what your competitors are doing and offering.

The truth is its really hard to create a successful Google Adwords campaign whether you’re a newbie or an advanced internet marketer. It’s a high risk marketing method that will cost you dearly if you commit a mistake. You can always delay putting up your Adwords campaign but the insights and rewards will come only after you start your campaign and continually find ways to improve it.

Aside from its popularity, pay per click marketing indeed looks promising when it comes to earning good profit online. From high volume of traffic to your site, to getting good placements on the paid listings on search engines of course, these are things a business would want to have online to get maximum profit, but what about its drawbacks? Why do some PPC campaigns fail?
Pay per click, like any other advertising tool, may also have some pitfalls, and it pays to heed these issues when doing pay per click marketing.
To have a clear picture of the drawbacks of pay per click marketing, here are four of the major issues in PPC campaign.
● Cost. Pay per click can be costly. There are also possibilities of competing and bidding for wrong keywords that will not give you your desired results. Proper management of your Google Adwords campaign will prevent your campaigns from getting what is commonly referred to in the internet marketing world as the “Google Slap.” So exactly WHAT IS the Google Slap? That’s when Google decides that you have done something that is either against their policies, quality guidelines, or against the law and they decide to “slap” you for it.
Sometimes that punishment results in your website being removed from its index and search results. Other times, it may be an “adjustment” downward for your page ranking. Here is how Google puts it in their own words:
“Google may temporarily or permanently remove sites from its index and search results if it believes it is obligated to do so by law, if the sites do not meet Google’s quality guidelines, or for other reasons, such as if the sites detract from users’ ability to locate relevant information. We cannot comment on the individual reasons a page may be removed…” (Google Webmasters/Site Owners Help Manual)
The “Google Slap” is mostly used when referring to cases where organic listings are penalized. Organic listings are free search results that appear below and to the left of paid ads; however, make no mistake about it; you can get “slapped” for running bad Adword campaigns as well. An example of having one’s Adword campaign being slapped would be where perhaps your ads were costing $3 a click and suddenly Google raised your minimum bid to $10.
Here are some of the common mistakes people make in their Adword campaigns that result in Google slaps: -Poorly written ads with extremely low click-through rates -Using too many broad-matching keywords, which really have no relevancy to the terms searched on; this will also result in low click-through rates, which will get you “slapped” with higher ad prices. -Low quality scores, where there is no relevancy between the keywords searched on, the Adword copy, and the landing page. -Using a destination URL that is not congruent with the display URL in your ad -Deceptive advertising; DON’T do this.
There are many other ways to get yourself slapped, but I think you may be getting the picture. Now, what you REALLY want to get from Google is what is referred to as “Google Love.”
Google loves for its searchers to find what they want; in fact, if you can figure out a way to make sure that your products or services are exactly what a searcher is looking for, Google will LOVE you. It’s really that simple. Many people try to over-complicate this.
Google loves for its searchers to be happy and they will reward you will lower-priced ads if you can consistently and effectively make this happen. Many advertisers don’t know it, but the ads at the top are not necessarily the ones who are paying the most. The Google bidding process factors in something called a “quality score,” which is the great equalizer. Quality scores assure Google that an advertiser cannot simply “buy” their way to the top position without giving the searchers value in return.
I don’t know about you, but I would rather be loved than slapped – especially when we are talking about my Google Adwords campaign.
