Everyone dreams of making it big at something. Whether it is for discovering the cure for cancer, becoming a movie star, writing a best-selling novel, or becoming a successful band. However, how many of you thought that the key to this kind of rich and famous success could be achieved through web marketing? Well, it is and here is a success story to prove it.

One Direction is a British-Irish boy band that signed to Simon Cowell’s record label Syco Records after being formed and placing third in the seventh series of The X Factor. They later signed in North America to Columbia Records. One Direction released their debut album Up All Night, the record became the fastest-selling debut album in the UK of 2011 and In 2012, it debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. This made One Direction the first UK band in history to debut at number one with their first album. The reason for their overnight success was through web marketing and social media networking.

After placing third in the X-Factor, One Direction and their web marketers fish batted fame with a detailed and interactive web campaign. The idea of this campaign was not to be overtly commercial in their marketing but to engage fans and make them feel like part of the campaign.

In order to do just that the web marketing team created a story about how a crazed fan stole their laptop and wouldn’t give it back until other One Direction fans prove they are as big a supporter of the band as she is. The campaign almost doubled traffic to One Direction’s website. It attracted 200,000 participants created 12 Twitter trends and racked up more than 2.5 million YouTube views.

This traffic also made One Direction, who didn’t even win the X-Factor, the first UK band in history to debut at number one with their first album. The reason for this feat and overnight success was because web marketing and social media networking. Without these two factors, One Direction wouldn’t be nearly as popular as it is today.
